About Atomic Tutoring - Bespoke Science & Maths Support

Committed To Excellence In Tuition

My Story and Values

I’m Jane  and I’ve been teaching and tutoring chemistry for 20 years. Before I went into teaching I graduated with a degree in Applied Chemistry from  The Robert Gordon University ,Aberdeen.

I then worked in the chemical industry  for a large oil major doing research on engine oil additives before moving to complete my teacher training degree with the University of Leicester via SCITT (School centered initial teacher training).

I qualified as a Science teacher in 2006 and since then I have worked in a range of different UK  schools including state secondary and sixth form colleges,

I’ve been tutoring A Level chemistry and science GCSE since my undergraduate degree and have always had a passion for supporting individual students .

I moved to online tutoring six years ago when I set up Atomic Tutoring. Which has allowed me the privilege of working with students all over the country. In 2026 I decided to finally step out of my part time classroom teaching role to concentrate fully on my online  science tuition .I am looking to expand my tutoring through to offering day time sessions.

My ethos has always been to build self confidence and resiliance in my students and tutee's. I have often found through out my teaching career ,that its students own mindset that holds them back, they have self doubt, cross out correct answers and second guess themselves'.

Getting students to take risks in the school classroom can feel uncomfortable for them and they are often afraid if getting the answers wrong in front of classmates ,so they don't attempt to even try.

This can be very frustrating for parents and for the child themselves. I have found that although I impart knowledge , and yes I unpick misconceptions and fill in gaps of knowledge. The most effective skill in my toolkit is to build self belief, confidence in their knowledge by giving my tutee's a safe place to trust their instincts, take a leap and not worry about getting it wrong. With me they learn that they often get the answer correct more often then not.

As a Mum to two boys I can relate to the pressures of parenting and wanting the best for them , whilst  realising how hard it can be to get them to achieve well in their exam whilst managing the pressures of running a home and maintaining a career.
